Bethany United Church of Christ

Embracing the Community

About Us

Reverend Colleen Samson

Welcome to the Pastor’s Corner. If you are looking for a church to attend, I’m glad you decided to check us out. This is my ninth year at Bethany United Church of Christ (UCC) and I am more excited about our ministries than I have ever been. Of course, our ministries are evolving because we believe God is Still Speaking in our world and the people at Bethany are tuned in to hear what God is requiring of us as a community of faith. Bethany is a church that widens the welcome to all people.  Come and be part of this exciting time for this church in this community. "No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here."
Bethany’s motto is “Embracing the Community.” Our goal is to reach our community through programs and ministries that people need. We participate in the Foster/Kinship Care program because of the need in Catawba County.  Bethany church members help people by volunteering and donating funds on the local and national level.

We also “Embrace the Community” through participation in the LINC (Linked in New Creative) Ministries Gift and Thrift in Newton. We joined with five other small UCC churches to offer quality goods at a reduced price. You can also donate articles to the (LINC) Gift and Thrift by stopping by or contacting the store at 828-994-4170. Other small household repairs are can be made through our Heart and Hammer Team; applications can be picked up at the LINC Gift and Thrift.  This is a direct reflection of my belief that we are to be Jesus in this world with our hands, feet, hearts and minds. My hope for Bethany is that ministry occurs both inside and outside the walls of the church.

As an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, my ministry vision is one of peace and justice. I was ordained in the Central Association of the Massachusetts Conference, UCC, after graduating with a Master of Divinity from the Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, CA. I also hold a Master in Social Work with a specialization in Family Therapy, from Boston University, MA. My undergraduate work was in Music Education. Currently, I am working on a Doctorate in Ministry from United Theological Seminary.   Life experiences, education, and a mind for God’s Kingdom here on earth, all inform my ministry.
Come and be our guest---once, twice, sometimes, all the time----get to know us. We want to know you and extend to you a different vision of church for today’s world.
Serving with Bethany Church Members,
Pastor Colleen

About The United Church of Christ

The United Church of Christ (UCC) is a distinct and diverse community of Christians that come together as one church to join faith and action.  With over 5,000 churches and nearly one million members across the U.S., the UCC serves God in the co-creation of a just and sustainable world.  The UCC is a church of firsts, a church of extravagant welcome, and a church where "…they may all be one" (John 17:21).

The Church of Firsts. Since 1957, the United Church of Christ has been the church of firsts, weaving God’s message of hope and extravagant welcome with action for justice and peace. Together, we live out our faith in ways that effect change in our communities.  The UCC's many "firsts" mean that we have inherited a tradition of acting upon the demands of our faith.  When we read in Galatians: "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus"—a demand is made upon us. And so we were the first historically white denomination to ordain an African-American, the first to ordain a woman, the first to ordain an openly gay man, and the first Christian church to affirm the right of same-gender couples to marry. We were in the forefront of the anti-slavery movement and the Civil Rights movement.  Our response to the demands of our faith is woven into the history of our country.

A Church of Extravagant Welcome - Today, we continue to change lives throughout the world. We work alongside more than 200 mission partners. We labor ceaselessly to fight injustice, in the United States and abroad. We instill our vision into our youth and young adults, forging leaders who will imagine new dreams. And we sustain and develop church leaders, pastors, and our local churches to live their faith in exciting new ways.  We believe in a God that is still speaking, a God that is all-loving and inclusive.  We are a church that welcomes and accepts everyone as they are, where your mind is nourished as much as your soul.

We are a church where Jesus the healer meets Jesus the revolutionary, and where together, we grow a just and peaceful world.
